This job involved the sympathetic refurbishment of the vestry at St.Julians Church in Wellow.
The objective was to create a warm inviting environment to provide a meeting place for various groups and activities within the parish.

The ceiling was insulated and a lobby created using a bespoke gun stock style door. The intricate timber cornice existing on the east side of the room was replicated and run across the ceiling of new cupboards along the west side. Electric underfloor heating was fitted as the primary heat source to the room and Karndean vinyl flooring laid. Various stonework was cleaned, walls were plastered and complete decoration carried out.

The Vestry was also re-wired and lighting improved. Whilst re-wiring it was discovered that a new electrical supply to the bell tower was necessary for health and safety reasons.

The Rajpoot

This project doubled in size the award winning Indian restaurant The Rajpoot in Argyle Street, Bath. The sub basement adjacent to the restaurant, originally a bakery, was stripped back to the stonework. Structural openings were made, walls moved and built, staircases moved and a lift dismantled.

The area was then damp-proofed and plastered. Ventilation and air conditioning was installed, along with a complex lighting and sound system.

Bespoke joinery was designed and built, in keeping with the requirements, and a disabled lavatory created. The crucial stage was when we knocked through the 600 mm thick dividing wall. It was necessary for this to be carried out as quickly and as “dust free” as possible; closing the restaurant for as little time as possible. We then had to accommodate the different floor levels between the two rooms and to create a finished reception area that combined the two; and was bright and inviting.

Restoration of listed farmhouse

This project was completed in three phases. For these works we were provided with basic architectural drawings which were then detailed by us and altered and adapted in conjunction with the clients.

Phase 1 included creating a wet room at the front of the house between the two main bedrooms. This was achieved using materials such as Travertine Stone, sandblasted glass sliding doors and teak slated shower base to give a stunning effect.

Phase 2 was the re design of the main 1st floor hallway, the floors were structurally strengthened, walls were also moved and redesigned incorporating concealed storage and new doors. A luxury bathroom was also fitted during this stage.

The final and largest job was to almost re-build the rear of the farmhouse to create an entertainment room. The entire roof was replaced and a rigid steel beam fitted to enable the ceiling to be an uninterrupted pitch, lime mortar was again used to rebuild the rubble stone walls. New openings were formed and oak frames fitted. On the ground floor we supplied and fitted three glazed oak door panels, opening fully onto the new raised patio area.

During all three phases, the electrics and plumbing were adapted and extended by our fully qualified trades people.

As with all of our projects, and all work was certified by our registered trades and the relevant Local Authorities Agencies.

This project turned some damp dark vaults into a bright extension of the existing living space. All the incoming services were re-sited and the vaults damp proofed with a membrane system*. Original stone shelves were carefully dismantled to be rebuilt and used in the refurbished vault. The floors were excavated, insulated and laid, then tiled throughout. Bespoke joinery supplied and fitted, and the electrical and heating layout designed by us in conjunction with the clients. The vaults were transformed into a shower wet room, a study / guest bedroom, a utility room and a cloakroom.

The main challenges to this project were diverting an underground steam that ran under the house; discovered during excavation, the mechanical extraction of the steam/condensation created by the shower, and the complicated lighting arrangements, including floor lights within the shower.

The project also involved removing the existing bathroom in the basement, converting the room into a dining room, then knocking through into the kitchen in the adjacent room. We returned to upgrade the kitchen the following year.

This is a studded polypropylene waterproofing membrane with a special mesh welded to one side. It is fixed to damp, contaminated walls using plaster plugs, with the studs facing the wall. This creates an air gap that allows the wall to breathe whilst blocking the passage of moisture. On the outer side of the membrane, the special mesh can be plastered onto, allowing a dry plaster finish without any danger of contamination from damp or salts in the wall.

Conservation of garden building

This project turned a derelict out building attached to a listed building into a garden / breakfast room. Again, this was almost entirely rebuilt using lime mortar and glazed french doors were supplied and fitted to lead out into the garden. The roof was completely replaced using reclaimed clay tiles and incorporating a conservation roof light, a new floor was laid and the existing garden wall was damp-proofed and became an internal wall.

Once the outbuilding was weather tight and secure we knocked through into the main house, adapting the kitchen to suit the customer and laying underfloor heating and slate tiles throughout.

A separate part of the works was to dismantle the existing aluminium conservatory and supply and fit a new bespoke hardwood one.
